This week’s Song of the Week comes courtesy of Charli XCX and her thirst-trap of a single.
There are over 60 reasons why ‘Boys’ is this week’s Song of the Week. And among them include a topless Cameron Dallas, Diplo playing with puppies, Joe Jonas licking off a milk moustache, and a smouldering Jay Park (certainly not an exhaustive list).
“They’re doing all the sexy things that girls usually do in music videos,” said the singer-songwriter (and now director) in an interview with BBC Radio 1.
In her self-directed music video, Charli XCX subverts the infamous male gaze, and shines the spotlight on these man-candies instead. And they come in all shapes, sizes (Mac DeMarco looks fierce with his #dadbod while licking a guitar), and ethnicities, celebrating diversity in the best way possible.
With a cheery mix of breezy tune, charming beats, and irreverent – but relatable – lyrics (“I need that bad boy to do me right on a Friday/And I need that good one to wake me up on a Sunday”), ‘Boys’ is a spunky summertime tune that will certainly satiate your thirst. It’s a song that’s both easy on the ears… and the eyes.
