Press Play: ‘Call Out My Name’ by The Weeknd

The Weeknd is back with this jam that is possibly about ex Selena Gomez.

The Weeknd Call out my name Selena Gomez Justin Bieber

Fans of Canadian artiste The Weeknd have had a busy week. The singer dropped surprise release ‘My Dear Melancholy’, a mini-album of consisting of six tracks. The EP (a first for Abel) is a follow-up to 2016’s critically-acclaimed ‘Starboy’.

The Frank Dukes-produced ‘Call Out My Name’ serves as the opening track, and it signals a return to his signature moody, dark music a la ‘House of Balloons’ (which made way for a more upbeat ‘Starboy’). While we certainly enjoyed what ‘Starboy’ brought to the table, this is The Weeknd that we fell in love with. The critics seem to love it too, with many lauding the project and calling it a “return to form”.

The song’s pointed lyrics (in particular, “I almost cut a piece of myself for your life”) has led fans to think that the song is about former flame Selena Gomez, who grabbed headlines earlier when she had to undergo a kidney transplant. Gomez has since returned to on-again, off-again boyfriend Justin Bieber, who in turn has had multiple exchanges with The Weeknd. Drama! Read all about it here, here and here.

‘Call Out My Name’ also sits comfortably at the top spot of the Singapore Top 50 chart on Spotify this week – no surprises here, though, considering how the song chalked up the largest first-day stream count in 2018.

Welcome back, Abel.
