Secret Invasion, the new espionage series from Marvel Studios, premieres exclusively on Disney+ on June 21.
It’s been some time since we last checked in with Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The last time we saw the iconic character was in the post-credit scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home, where it was revealed that (a version of?) Fury that Spider-Man has interacted with was in fact Talos, a Skrull in disguise. The real Nick Fury was, in fact, in space with other Skrulls. In case you need to be caught up to speed, the Skrulls are a technologically advanced race of reptilian humanoids, notable for their shapeshifting abilities.
Fury, played by Samuel L Jackson, is set to return in the upcoming Secret Invasion, much to the excitement of Marvel fans, ourselves included.
In the newly released tension-building trailer, Fury is seen taking on a daunting new challenge without the assistance of his reliable Avengers team. He declares that this war is one he must confront alone.
The series will follow Fury and Talos, portrayed by Ben Mendelsohn, as they strive to prevent the Skrulls from taking over Earth. These shape-shifting extraterrestrial beings have been covertly infiltrating the MCU’s prominent figures for several years.
In the present-day MCU, Fury discovers a covert invasion of Earth by a group of shape-shifting Skrulls. Along with Everett Ross, Maria Hill, and Talos, a Skrull who has settled on Earth, they unite to thwart an impending Skrull attack and save humanity. The show was created by Kyle Bradstreet, adapting the legendary 2008 comic plot that exposes the Skrulls’ surreptitious infiltration of influential organizations worldwide.
The series will also offer a deeper exploration of Fury’s character, presenting various facets of the enigmatic, guarded former director of S.H.I.E.L.D., who is recognized for his trademark eye patch.
Apart from Samuel L. Jackson, the cast also includes Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Martin Freeman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Christopher McDonald, Katie Finneran, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and Don Cheadle.
Fans have been excited to see Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Olivia Colman (The Crown), and Kingsley Ben-Adir (Peaky Blinders), fresh faces that “Secret Invasion” brings to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reports suggest that Ben-Adir will assume the role of a key antagonist in the show.
Ali Selim serves as director and executive producer, alongside Kevin Feige, Jonathan Schwartz, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Samuel L. Jackson, Kyle Bradstreet, Brian Tucker, and co-executive producers Jennifer L. Booth, Allana Williams, and Brant Englestein.
This Disney+ series marks the third release in Phase Five of Marvel’s lineup, which began with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in February, followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 slated for May. Upcoming projects in the pipeline include Echo, a Disney+ series, the second season of Loki, and The Marvels, a sequel to Captain Marvel.
Secret Invasion will premiere June 21 on Disney+.
