This week’s Song of the Week comes courtesy of Kesha, marking her triumphant return to music with the emotional single.
Kesha is officially back with ‘Praying’, her first single in four years.
Her music has been sidelined by an extensive (and still ongoing) legal battle with former mentor Dr Luke, in which she accused the producer of sexual assault and battery.
The song presents a new sound for the pop star and reflects the struggles she has been going through, as well as a resolution to push through and overcome them.
Noted for churning out party anthems like ‘TiK ToK’, ‘Blow’ and ‘We R Who We R’, Kesha showcases her vulnerable side in ‘Praying’, with powerful raw vocals and emotionally charged lyrics like “You brought the flames and you put me through hell.”
In a letter the singer penned, she revealed that ‘Praying’ is about “finding peace in the fact that I can’t control everything”. Despite the pain she has experienced, she says in the song that she prays for the person who hurt her, and hopes he too, will find peace one day.
On her Instagram page, she added: “I hope this song reaches people who are in the midst of struggles, to let them know that no matter how bad it seems now, you can get through it. If you have love and truth on your side, you will never be defeated. Don’t give up on yourself. That’s the key.”
She also announced that her new album, titled ‘Rainbow’, will be dropping on Aug 11.
‘Praying’ is available on iTunes, Apple Music and Spotify.
