Sasha Velour, winner of Drag Race Season 9, brings her latest tour to Singapore this July.
Drag superstar Sasha Velour will showcase gender-bending fantasy, self-constructed high fashion and lip-syncing glory – all rolled into one 75-minute solo performance.
Velour rose to international fame on Season 9 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. In the season’s final episode, she snatched the winner’s crown (and the weaves of audiences worldwide) in a surprise lip-sync showdown among the top four contestants.
Her rendition of Whitney Houston’s ‘So Emotional’ was dubbed “the best TV performance of 2017” by The A.V. Club.
Before her time on Drag Race, Velour was already a stalwart of the Brooklyn drag scene, producing and starring in the monthly show Nightgowns – celebrated as “beautiful and funny and politically charged” by The New York Times. As a performer, her iconic bald-headed appearance pays homage to her mother, who passed on from cancer in 2015.
As a visual artist, Velour (alongside partner Johnny Velour) is the mastermind behind the publication Velour: The Drag Magazine. First released in 2015, it celebrates drag and queer culture in all its wondrous, vibrant and unrestrained beauty. Velour’s iconic phrase “be the strange you wish to see in the world” comes through (yas queen) in her vibrant illustrations and graphic design – almost entirely self-created, no less.
Said to celebrate “the spectacle and heart of drag”, her show in Singapore will include numbers like ‘Cellophane’, ‘This Woman’s Work’ and ‘Don’t Cry Out Loud’.
SASHA VELOUR LIVE IN SINGAPORE shows on 25 July 2018, 8pm, at the Shine Auditorium. Tickets are on sale here.
