Review: This Tiny Portable Speaker Just Made Our Office So. Much. Noisier.

The Muzen OTR is tiny, but don’t underestimate its booming sound.

What’s it like to work for a media company, you ask? Well, if you thought fancy red carpet events, glitzy parties, and backstage access every day, um, we hate to break it to you, but you are wrong. It’s more like, well, a never ending pile of work to clear and stressed writers with multiple cups of coffee decorating the table.

The only thing that gets us through the day? Music. Honestly though, when we’re experiencing the mid-day food coma or fatigue, music is a major mood booster.

Our team recently received the brand new Muzen OTR Metal to test, and in order to give you an honest review, we demanded requested for everyone to unplug their earphones and listen to music through a communal speaker.

Before we go on with our review, here’s a quick introduction to the Muzen OTR Metal portable speaker. It comes in the shape of a retro 60s-era radio set that is perfect for the current wave of nostalgia-everything. Vintage is the new modern, y’all, and the Muzen OTR Metal not only looks like a radio, but also functions as one, with FM radio tuning (you need to manually tune with a knob and scale – groovy!). And despite its old-school look, it comes equipped with modern features as well, including bluetooth compatibility.

So after a couple of weeks with the Muzen OTR Metal portable speaker, here are three ways in which it has changed our office life (for the better):

1. It Helps Us Discover New Music

With Muzen’s functions of FM radio tuning, Bluetooth compatibility, and an auxiliary input for device connectivity, we never run out of good music here. Because we are “sharing” the speaker, we mostly toggle between the speaker’s bluetooth and radio modes for convenience – and we actually really enjoy both. On bluetooth mode, each team member takes turns to play their music of choice, and because we have such a diverse team, music played can range from Top 40s and hip-hop to K-Pop and S-Pop (that’s local music for you uninitiated folks). On radio mode, we tune in to stations like 987 and Kiss 92 to keep up with the latest hits.

2. Office Ravings. Yep.

Can you really blame us? This tiny little speaker is loud, which means it’s able to fill the entire space at maximum volume. When you have everyone sharing their favourite music, it’s almost impossible to not break out into dances, or singing out loud at the top of our lungs (High School Musical, Disney classics and Britney Spears always get us in peak karaoke mode). The bass and beats elicited from the speaker are so rich and crisp, and another feature worth noting is the amazing battery life, which serves up to 10 hours of playback. Impressive. Although our neighbours probably don’t appreciate it as much as we do. Oops!

3. It Jazzes Up the Office Space

This retro radio makes quite the statement piece. Meticulously handcrafted, Muzen’s OTR also brings back radio into vogue with its radio set designs of the 1960s. Muzen’s OTR speakers come in two signatures: Muzen OTR Metal and Muzen OTR Wood. With us is the metal version in Crimson Red, but also comes in Jet Black, Flamingo Pink and Mint Green. Built using high density alloy and coated with acrylic stoving enamel, the Muzen OTR Metal embodies a sleek and elegant exterior. If you are looking for a more rugged look, the Muzen OTR Wood will certainly be able to match your taste with its handcrafted walnut exterior and light resonant tonewood.

Apart from a detachable antenna and leather padded carrying case, these locally-purchased Muzen OTR units also come with unique accessories, such as a leather carrying strap and a sticker set which makes these speakers the perfect lifestyle companion whether you are at home or on the go.
