It’s been a hot minute (five years, to be exact) since Daniel Caesar graced Singapore with his gamut of contemporary R&B tunes and evocative artistry. If you’ve been waiting half a decade to catch him live, you’re in for a treat as the R&B sensation is set to perform in Singapore on 17 July at The Star Theatre. Singapore will be the second stop for the artist’s Superpowers World Tour – Leg 1: Asia.

Daniel released his debut album Freudian independently in 2017, and the album would lead him to be an R&B breakthrough shortly after.

Best known for his five-time platinum track ‘Best Part (feat. H.E.R)’ and three-time platinum track ‘Get You (feat. Kali Uchis)’, Daniel’s rise to fame bagged himself a Grammy award for “Best R&B Performance” in 2019, just two years after his debut. Daniel’s success was only getting started as CASE STUDY 01, his 2019 release, shot up to 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. Daniel subsequently blazed his way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with Justin Bieber in their megahit ‘Peaches (feat. Giveon)’ which amassed billions of streams.

2022 was the year the musician received close to 70 million streams to date for his single ‘Please Do Not Lean’, earning him critical acclaim worldwide, including a nomination for ‘Traditional R&B/Soul Recording of the Year’ in the Juno Awards. At this point, are we even surprised?

A year later, in 2023, Caesar returned with ‘Do You Like Me?’ and ‘Let Me Go’, two singles that teased the sound of his newest album NEVER ENOUGH, which dropped in April. These are some of the tracks that fans can anticipate for the upcoming tour, as well as numbers from the album, including ‘Valentina’.

Oh, and did you know that one of his b-sides, ‘Blessed’, was in former President Barack Obama’s annual favourites playlist back in 2018? And we know he’s in more than just President Obama’s playlist (psst, he’s in ours too).

The road to success was never easy for Daniel, though. After a brief period of homelessness at the age of 17, Daniel began doing gigs which would eventually lead him to connect with producers and future collaborators Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett. They then began writing and recording his first EP Praise Break, released in 2014. The EP earned him the 19th spot on Rolling Stone’s “20 Best R&B Albums of 2014″. 2015’s EP Pilgrim’s Paradise saw him receiving positive critical acclaim too. Sure, it wasn’t a huge commercial success then, but tracks such as ‘Streetlightsbecame sleeper hits, and that’s still a win in our books.

Daniel draws inspiration from gospel and soul when it comes to crafting his tunes. He turns to philosophical concepts in his music, and synergises them with a blend of R&B and electronic music, not forgetting to sprinkle in a bit of his childhood experience to make his music truly Daniel-Caesar-worthy. He even mentioned celebrities such as Frank Ocean, Jim Morrison and Beyoncé as both his musical and stylistic inspirations. I guess you could say real recognise real.

Having almost 50 nominations under his belt, a bunch of accolades from Grammy, MTV and Juno awards is no easy feat. Toss in over 26 million monthly Spotify listeners and 1.6 million subscribers on YouTube, and it’s safe to say that this unstoppable and critically-acclaimed Canadian R&B prodigy is a huge deal. You won’t be feeling any Buyer’s Remorse witnessing Daniel Caesar on stage, trust us.
