For the first time in its 175-year history, the renowned State Ballet of Georgia brings Swan Lake to Singapore’s Sands Theatre.
Swan Lake, the world’s most celebrated ballet, is set to sweep Singapore audiences off their feet next September. With a strictly limited run from 11 to 14 September 2025, this production will feature legendary Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s timeless score, dazzling choreography, and a tale that oscillates between light and shadow.
At its core, Swan Lake is the timeless ballet that tells the heartrending tale of young royal Prince Siegfried, a romantic dreamer, and Odette, the Swan Queen, whose love is bound by a curse. Transformed into a swan by day by the sinister sorcerer Rothbart, Odette can only regain her human form under the moonlight. Odette’s only hope for breaking the spell is a true love’s vow, but Rothbart’s deception threatens to destroy their happiness when he disguises his daughter, Odile, as Odette to trick Siegfried. The ballet’s iconic choreography, particularly the graceful swan movements and dramatic pas de deux (a dance duet in which two dancers perform ballet steps together), combined with Tchaikovsky’s soaring music, has captivated audiences for generations.
Whether you’re intrigued by Black Swan’s dark psychological twists and eager to explore the iconic ballet that inspired it, or you’re seeking to relive the magic of a classic fairytale, this is your chance to witness Swan Lake in its most sublime form.
Guided by the artistry of Nina Ananiashvili, one of ballet’s brightest stars, this production takes flight with elegance, precision, and passion. As The Independent says, it’s “clean, confident, sturdily traditional.”
What to Expect from the Show
This Swan Lake production stays true to its roots while embracing the unique Georgian flair under Ananiashvili’s bold direction. Elaborate costumes, stunning choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, and lavish sets recreate the lakeside and ballroom scenes that have captivated audiences for over a century.
Lauded by The Telegraph as “tender, graceful dancing, exquisite,” the audience can expect nothing less from the company of 70 accomplished dancers, who will seamlessly balance strength and grace for over two hours, bringing to life the timeless tale of Prince Siegfried and the Swan Queen Odette.
“Swan Lake is one of our best repertoires. It combines elaborate costumes, stunning choreography, exquisite ornaments, and the young generation of dancers with Georgian characteristics. Swan Lake has always had an important place in my career. It was my first dance that I performed in the Bolshoi Theatre and was my first and final significant performance at American Ballet Theatre. I can’t wait to share it with the audience in Singapore for the first time,” shares Ananiashvili.
The Visionaries Behind Swan Lake
This extraordinary performance is the result of collaboration among some of ballet’s most revered creatives. The choreography, originally by Petipa and Ivanov, has been enhanced by Alexei Fadeyechev and Ananiashvili herself, ensuring it retains its classical essence while offering fresh visual splendour.
Based at the historic Opera and Ballet State Theatre in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, the company has become synonymous with grace and versatility under Ananiashvili’s leadership. Since her return to Georgia in 2004, Ananiashvili has elevated the troupe’s global reputation, making them a staple on the world stage and a top-10 classical ballet company.
This production is brought to Singapore by Base Entertainment Asia, the team behind some of the region’s most iconic live entertainment experiences, including the recently-concluded SIX: The Musical. “Swan Lake is one of the most iconic ballets in the world and we are proud to bring this extraordinary State Ballet of Georgia production to Singapore,” says Chantal Prudhomme, CEO of Base.
Whether you’re a die-hard ballet fan or new to the art form, Swan Lake is the perfect entry point into the magic of classical ballet. Its universal themes of love, sacrifice, and triumph over darkness resonate across generations, making it an unforgettable experience for all.
