In this 81-minute double album, John Legend embraces his iconic name for the first time in an album title.
Ever since the release of the album on September 9th, the songs have been playing in my playlist on full repeat. Several times, I had to stop myself from breaking into a dance to the groovy songs in the track list. And if it’s one thing for sure, John Legend really has his ways in adding flavour to his music to capture the listeners full attention.
Recently, ZYRUP has had the opportunity to join in the Press Conference for this album release where we get to listen in to the answers John Legend has for the media’s questions about the album.
Laced with 24 songs, this long-awaited eight album is suffused with an unapologetic spirit of sensuality and joy, informed by the full vulnerability of pain, praise and healing. After all of his accolades, Legend has been open about feeling motivated to deliver fresh content about his joys of life.
Speaking on the name of the album, John Legend explains: “When I named it LEGEND, it was really me self-titling the album because it really represents who I am, all of my influences, all of my inspirations, all of my stories, and experiences from joy and celebration to pain and challenges and being tested. All of those emotions are in the album.”
As he continued to talk about the meaning of the songs, he said “Stardust means a lot to both me and Chrissy. It’s one of the earlier songs that we wrote and it really means a lot to us as we were going through tough times with our family last year and in late 2020. This song is about the fact that no matter what you’re going through, no matter how you’re feeling at that time, you’re special and you mean something to people. We needed that song in our lives back then and it’s been very healing for Chrissy, for my whole family, and it means a lot to me.”
“All She Wanna Do” is the third single from LEGEND Album. The music video captures a vibrant, disco-inspired visual directed by Christian Breslauer. When asked about his collaboration with Saweetie, John said they talked a lot before Saweetie wrote her verse with the song. They discussed the mood and what we were trying to accomplish with this song.
With words full of praise, John said, “Oh, it was so cool working with her. She did a wonderful job with it. She put so much charisma, energy and flavour into this song, and of course she graced us with her presence in the video as well. She’s such a positive person who has great energy and brought all of that to the song and to the video.”
Moving forward with his music career, he mentioned that he wants to make his songs special and impactful making it feel good in the moment but also be something that people wanna listen to over and over creating that timeless essence to a song.
After hearing all about the process of this album being produced, I’m sure fans are already looking forward to upcoming releases from John Legend himself.
