We sat down with the hosts of the newest addition to the Zodapop community, ‘Liquid Courage Show’.
We all need a little liquid courage from time to time to let loose and speak our minds. At other times when it is inappropriate to get intoxicated but you find yourself itching to immerse yourself in the feel-good atmospheres of bars, join host Clement Lee (Clement), showrunner Raex Philip (Raex), and their special guests as they chat over a drink or two on the ‘Liquid Courage Show’.
In each episode, they explore the most intriguing and sometimes random topics including current affairs and moral dilemmas – topped off with raunchy banter.
We spoke to the two of them to find out more about their podcast and the interesting concept behind it.
Tell us more about yourselves.
Clement: I think to most people I’m a pretty weird dude. I think I just love to make people laugh so I really have no shame. I’d do anything really
Raex: There’s nothing more rewarding to me than making my friends belly laugh. I love deeper conversations tackled with levity and wit, and slapping a wrapper of shamelessness around it all.
Why did you decide to start the ‘Liquid Courage Show’?
Clement: I’ve actually always wanted to start a show because I actually listen to a lot of podcasts in general. I just always felt that there wasn’t any reason for people to listen to me; like, why me? I’m not famous or someone that’s an expert on anything really. But when I heard about Zodapop I started to toy with the idea again and realised that podcasts don’t always have to be tonally serious or instructive. I wanted to create something beyond, or bigger than, just me or any one other person talking. That’s why the show is more of a place where our listeners feel like they grab a stool, have a seat and enjoy a drink with us.
Tell us more about the reasoning behind the ‘bar concept’ of the podcast.
Raex: We wanted our show to stand for warmth, humour, openness, jolly banter over a broad range of topics with no restrictions. A place to kick it with our guests, let loose and really be whoever we wanted to be for a bit. In that sense the bar is really a character in itself, because this isn’t just a podcast where ‘a couple guys and girls just talk about whatever’. The bar is a symbol of what our show stands for, and it represents that to our listeners and guests. Who hasn’t had memorable drink-fast-talk-slow nights with friends and loved ones?
What do you envision ‘Liquid Courage Show’ becoming?
Clement: I see ‘Liquid Courage Show’ becoming more than just a traditional show but more of a place for like-minded people to just chill and have a drink. We make it a point to not take ourselves too seriously and just make sure we all have a good night. In the future I see the show doing YouTube exclusives where we have fun stuff like vlogs and us trying out new things. At the end of the day, we all want to have fun doing what we do.
What can your listeners get from listening to ‘Liquid Courage Show’?
Raex: Apart from the occasional odd factoid or unexpected anecdote… just some good laughs and some relaxation. The characters we have are constantly changing and evolving each episode according to our casting, subject matter etc., in order to play the best jokes, take the best direction and follow the vibe. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, and that’s something we try to establish with our audiences as well. It’s a comedy show; there’s something for everyone and nothing for anyone.
How did ‘Liquid Courage Show’ translate from ‘idea’ to ‘reality’? What were some of the research and preparations that had to be done?
Clement: We both share a great sense of content creation so beyond the technicalities of production or initial content direction, the biggest starting hurdle for us was the location itself. Although given the opportunity, we did not want to build a set. Given the strength of our ensemble, we really fought for the show to be ‘Filmed in an actual bar’.
Raex: It took some time to do some preliminary outreach and plan through the logistics, but we were able to work with the wonderful people at Buzzed Bar. It’s been a bit of a go-to hangout spot for us for cheap drinks (and good food), and we knew the crew, so it was a smooth working process to take things to production.
What else can your listeners expect from the podcast? Any upcoming exciting things?
Clement: More familiar faces and listener favourites to return to the show! And maybe some YouTube exclusives. We’ve got a pretty exciting line-up coming to the show, but shush – no spoilers!
